Yankees rookie outfielder Clint Frazier hits home run in major league debut

iStock/Thinkstock(HOUSTON) — It was a debut to remember for one of baseball’s top prospects.

New York Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier was promoted to the big club after the team suffered a slew of injuries.  Frazier finished the night 2-for-4 in his first big league game, notching a double and his first career home run in the team’s 7-6 loss to the Houston Astros.

The 22-year-old, who the Yankees acquired from the Cleveland Indians last season when New York traded reliever Andrew Miller, was wide-eyed when speaking to reporters after the game. He called the night “eventful,” telling members of the media:

“It is probably the best taste of baseball I have ever had. It’s disappointing to lose, but we have tomorrow. I am glad to be a part of this game.”

Frazier became the fourth-youngest player in franchise history to homer in his MLB debut and the youngest to do so since 1969, according to ESPN.

Frazier made headlines during spring training not only because he was a highly touted prospect, but because manager Joe Girardi and others in the Yankee organization suggested he cut his long, red hair to avoid being a distraction.

Frazier eventually abided, later saying he needed to be called out for being a black sheep. Girardi said he learned from the incident

Four Yankees were put on the disabled list ahead of Frazier’s debut: second baseman Starlin Castro, designated hitter Matt Holliday, first baseman Tyler Austin, and outfielder Dustin Fowler. It is unclear how long Frazier will stay in the majors, and whether or not he will be sent down when any of those players return.

A first-round pick of the Indians in 2013, Frazier is considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball. Prior to his promotion, he was hitting .257 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs in Triple-A.
