Turkish authorities ban transgender rights march

iStock/Thinkstock(ISTANBUL) — Turkish authorities have banned a march for transgender rights that was expected to take place in Istanbul on Sunday.

The Istanbul’s governor’s office said the eight Trans Pride March will not be allowed, citing the safety of the participants and tourists. Last year’s parade was also banned.

The governor’s office said there wasn’t a valid application submitted to hold the march.

Last week, the governor’s office banned a march for LGBTQ rights for the third year in a row. Police utilized tear gas and plastic bullets to prevent participants from gathering.
