Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts serves one-game suspension following on-field incident

Allen Kee/ESPN Images(SAN DIEGO) — Major League Baseball suspended Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts one game after he and San Diego Padres manager Andy Green were ejected from Friday’s game following an on-field altercation. He served the suspension Saturday night, a game the Dodgers won 8-0.

Roberts was suspended and fined for his role in a benches clearing feud during the team’s 10-4 win over the Padres. Green and Dodgers pitcher Alex Wood were also fined.

Roberts said of his suspension: “It’s what Major League Baseball felt was the right course of action, so I support it.”

Wood, who was pitching in Friday’s game, threatened to “drill” San Diego’s Jose Pirela with the ball after he suspected Pirela of stealing signs from their catcher while he was standing on second base. Roberts and Green were brought out of the dugout by home plate umpire Greg Gibson to discuss what was happening. The two engaged in an argument, Roberts shoved Green, and both benches cleared.

As Roberts charged after Green, he also bumped crew chief Sam Holbrook in the back.

Green took exception to Wood threatening one of his players, while Roberts claims he “didn’t appreciate” Green’s comment about Wood. No players were ejected, and the situation was diffused.

Green placed partial blame on the umpires for allowing the situation to escalate, saying:

“I understand what the umpiring crew was trying to do by issuing warnings, but to me, if you’re making threats to hit a guy on the baseball field, that’s an ejection right there, and they didn’t choose to handle it that way.”

Roberts says he and Green have not spoken to each other since the incident. Asked if he expects to talk with Green, Roberts simply replied, “No.”
