“Wonder Woman” and “Captain Underpants” among this week’s new releases

© 2017 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC. AND RATPAC ENTERTAINMENT, LLC(LOS ANGELES) — Here’s a look at the new movies opening nationwide Friday:

Wonder Woman — Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice star Gal Gadot reprises her role as Diana, princess of the Amazons, who learns of a grave threat to the world after she rescues crash-landing American WWI spy Steve Trevor — played by Star Trek‘s Chris Pine. His story of conflict convinces her to leave behind her sheltered island paradise to try to stop the threat. There, she discovers her full powers and true destiny. Robin Wright also stars. Rated PG-13.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie — This animated feature from DreamWorks stars Kevin Hart and Silicon Valley‘s Thomas Middleditch as a pair of pranksters named George and Harold, who hypnotize their principal — voiced by Ed Helms — into thinking he’s an enthusiastic, but incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants. Other voices include Nick Kroll and Jordan Peele. Rated PG.

Opening Friday limited release:

God of War — Set in the 16th century, this Chinese action film centers on Japanese pirates who take over Cengang in Zhejiang. They are finally defeated by Commander Yu — played by Sammo Hung. The pirates, however, manage to escape. Unrated.

Dean — The Daily Show alum Demitri Martin wrote, directed and stars in this film about a New York City illustrator who falls in love with a Los Angeles woman — played by Community‘s Gillian Jacobs — while trying to keep his father — portrayed by Kevin Kline — from selling the family home after his mother dies. Mary Steenburgen also stars. Rated PG-13.
