Cavaliers' J.R. Smith to Undergo Surgery on Fractured Thumb

(Photo by Phil Ellsworth / ESPN Images)(CLEVELAND) — Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R Smith will undergo surgery on a fractured right thumb, the team said Wednesday, and will miss at least four weeks of action.

A typical recovery from this injury, ESPN reports, is four to six weeks. The team, however, said that a timeline for Smith’s return would be established after the surgery.

Smith left the team’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday. Initial X-rays had been inconclusive.

The shooting guard signed a four-year contract with Cleveland after the team won the NBA Championship last season. Smith has averaged just 8.8 points this season.

Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue told reporters that he was not sure how exactly Smith injured the thumb.
