Defense Secretary Ash Carter Attends Ceremony in Israel for F-35 Delivery

iStock/Thinkstock(JERUSALEM) — U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter is attending a ceremony Monday for the delivery of America’s most advanced fighter jet to Israel, a sign of the strong U.S. commitment to Israel’s security.

Sec. Carter is attending the ceremony at the Netavim airbase in southern Israel, where two American pilots touched down to deliver its first two F-35 Stealth Fighter jets.

Israel has ordered 50 of the jets from Lockheed Martin, a move that will ensure its military superiority in the skies over the Middle East. It’s the F-35’s advanced stealth capability that is perhaps most important for Israel. It would give them the ability to evade the radar of missile defense systems that its enemies — Iran, Hezbollah or other terrorists — may use.

Carter is in Israel for a three-day visit where he’ll also meet with his counterpart Avigdor Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
