Massachusetts Officers Exposed to Heroin After Suspect Threw Drugs, Police Say

iStock/Thinkstock(FALMOUTH, Mass.) — Two officers in Falmouth, Massachusetts, were hospitalized after they said a suspect in a drug investigation threw an open bag of heroin at them.

The officers had executed a motor vehicle search warrant Friday after the vehicle’s operator, Russell Pena, was suspected of distributing heroin and cocaine, according to the Falmouth Police Department.

Pena, 38, was arrested along with 48-year-old Michael Lopes when marijuana, cocaine and $1,450 in cash was found in their possession, police said.

While authorities were booking Pena at the police station, Falmouth Police said he “became combative and began to struggle with officers.”

“During this struggle he was able to remove a bag of narcotics believed to be heroin from his pants in the area of his genitals,” a statement from Falmouth Police said. “Pena then tore the bag apart and dispersed the drugs in the air purposely toward and onto the police officers.”

The two officers and Pena were taken to Falmouth Hospital where they were treated for exposure to narcotics, police said. All were released by Friday afternoon, according to police.

Pena has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of possession of a class B substance, one count of trafficking a Class A substance, one count of obstruction of justice, and two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon. He is being held on $25,000 bail, police said.

Lopes is facing charges as well including one count of conspiracy to violate the narcotics laws and one count of being present where heroin is kept.
