Michael Zagaris/San Francisco 49ers/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem once again — this time during the team’s season opener on Monday Night Football.
Kaepernick has courted controversy as well as praise for the move — what he says is a protest against the treatment of “black people and people of color” in the U.S.
“When there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent in this country, I’ll stand,” Kaepernick said earlier this month.
Joining Kaepernick in protest were his teammates Erick Reid, who also knelt and Antoine Bethea and Eli Harold who raised their fists.
Kenny Britt and Robert Quinn, who play for their opponents, the L.A. Rams, also held up their fists.
After the gesture, Kaepernick was hugged by several teammates.
His protest has inspired support from a number of others in the NFL as well as other sports.
