Doctors Spend Twice As Much Time on Paperwork as Seeing Patients

NicoElNino/iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Your doctor likely spends more time on paperwork than he does with his patients, according to a new study.

The research, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, found that clinicians can actually spend twice as much time working with documents, tests and insurance issues as they do with patients face-to-face. Researchers running the small study observed more than 50 doctors in four subspecialties and found that the amount of non-clinical time doctors have to include in their schedules has increased in recent years.

Prior surveys of doctors have shown that they are frustrated by the amount of paperwork they have to do and the time it takes.
