Etowah County Coroner Resigns After Pleading Guilty To Theft Charges

Head, Michael

Etowah County Coroner Michael Head pleaded guilty in court Wednesday morning to second degree theft and resigned his office, one week after his arrest.

Head, 52, entered the plea this morning during a brief hearing before Judge William Rhea III at the Etowah County Judicial Center. He received a 31-month suspended sentence and 24 months of supervised probation.

Head must also pay court costs.

Last Wednesday, Head was charged with one count of second degree property theft and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, which was Ambien.

The arrest came after a search warrant was executed at Head’s Mistletoe Hollow Road residence in Gadsden, along with a search of his Etowah County Courthouse office.

Sheriff Todd Entrekin said authorities began investigating Head after relatives of a deceased person “observed Head taking prescription medications from the death scene.”

His son, 26 year old John Simon Head who was also arrested on three counts of drug possession, did not appear in court.
