SUMMERVILLE– Police arrested a Chattooga County school bus driver September 30 after a child’s backpack allegedly caught in the bus door. The moving bus dragged the child along Union Street in Summerville, according to WZQZ.

The station’s October 1 report cites a Summerville Police Department incident report and accompanying citations. It also identifies the driver as Kandy Nixon Craig.

According to that account, officers responded after witnesses reported a child trapped in the door as the bus pulled away. The child suffered a left-leg injury and later received treatment at Chattooga ER.

Craig told an officer she believed the child had exited and moved away before she drove off. However, police later reviewed video from the bus.

WZQZ reports that the footage showed Craig closing the door on the backpack as the child stepped off. She then began driving before the child was completely free.

Police arrested Craig at 5:54 p.m., according to WZQZ. The station lists three charges: reckless driving, driver must use care to avoid pedestrian, and safe operation of a school bus.

However, the charges are allegations. Craig is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
