CRBI OFFERS COOL WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT THIS WEEKEND
With temperatures expected to soar into triple digits this weekend, the Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) has on tap three beat the heat events.
The Rome-based river protection organization will host a canoe and kayak trip on the Etowah River and a beach party and SweetWater 0.0420 Micro-Marathon Saturday, and Sunday will continue the wet weekend with its 3rd annual Swimmable Water float trip on the Oostanaula River.
Saturday’s paddle trip runs nine miles from Allatoona Dam to Cartersville’s Leake Mound Site and includes a stop at the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site. The trip is free to CRBI members. Canoe and kayak rentals are available. To join CRBI, register and reserve rental boats visit www.coosa.org/events/paddle-trips.
The SweetWater 0.0420 Mirco-Marathon follows the paddle trip at 8 p.m. in downtown Rome. In this test of “endurance,” participants will attempt to walk the 0.0420-mile route from River Dog Paddle Co. at 5 Broad Street to River Dog Outpost at 1 Broad Street to enjoy a complimentary SweetWater beer at the finish line.
The Atlanta-based brewing company’s signature beer is its 420 Extra Pale Ale, and the event is one of many promotions SweetWater is sponsoring this summer through their Save Our Water campaign, an effort to generate funds for river protection organizations
Participants can register at http://www.coosa.org/events/river-dog-outpost-sweetwater-0.0420-micro-marathon. The $20 entry fee includes a 0.0420 Micro-Marathon t-shirt and decal, complimentary beer and entry to the party at River Dog Outpost. The beach party begins at 6 p.m.. All proceeds benefit CRBI.
Beating the heat continues Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with CRBI’s annual Swimmable Water event. River lovers are encouraged to bring tubes and floats to Ridge Ferry Park in Rome and take part in this 1.5-mile float through downtown to Heritage Park.
Last year more than 100 floaters participated in this celebration of clean water.
“We’re expecting another big crowd this year,” said Joe Cook, CRBI advocacy and communication coordinator. “With 100-degree temperatures expected there’s not many better places to be than half submerged in cool water.”
There is no cost to participate and shuttle service is provided.
