GAYLESVILLE – The 100th anniversary of Gaylesville football got started with a bang Friday night.

On a night when the Trojans honored all football teams of the past, Jack Sentell ran for 81 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns. He also had a 13-yard interception return for a score in helping the Trojans earn a 42-0 season-opening football victory over Lindsay Lane.

Aydn Heinrich had two touchdowns on runs of 66 and 71 yards. He also caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Ward, and had four tackles, an assist, and an interception on defense.

Sean Poss posted 83 yards on 10 carries with a 2-point conversion. Lucas McCullough made four tackles, had an assist, a fumble recovery, a sack and tackle for loss on defense.

“It was a wonderful night,” Gaylesville coach Brian Knapp said. “There were people here from the late 1940s to present day. The crowd was great, and our team effort was wonderful. It was just a wonderful night for our school and our community.”

The Trojans (1-0) built a 30-0 halftime lead.

“We set the tone pretty early,” Knapp said. “I felt like we kind of imposed out will and set the tone for the rest of the night. We were able to run the clock in the second half and not have any injuries.”

The Trojans travel to Valley Head to open Class 1A, Region 8 play on Sept. 4.

“It’s always a tough place to play at Valley Head,” Knapp said. “We’re going to expect their best and we’ll have to be at our best to have a chance to come out with a win on the road.”
