County Coroner Jeremy Deaton Stresses Safety During July 4th Holiday Weekend

July 4th Safety 1

The Fourth of July Holiday travel period begins Friday (July 1st) at 6:00pm, and it continues  through midnight, Monday (July 4th).

State and local law enforcement agencies will be on heightened alert – seeking out impaired and/or unsafe drivers and conducting road checks in an effort to make this heavily traveled holiday period as safe as possible for everyone.

Here are some important tips to keep in mind as you travel:

  • Always obey the speed limit.
  • Avoid distracted driving. Refrain from performing any activity that may take your focus off of the road, such as texting while driving.
  • Properly install child safety seats.
  • Do not leave children and pets in hot cars.
  • Do NOT drive under the influence of alcohol or any other substance
  • Wear your seat belt. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up before you hit the highway, no matter how short the trip.

WEIS Radio spoke with Cherokee County Coroner Jeremy Deaton regarding the importance of wearing seat belts, and how doing so can make all the difference in an auto accident:

Large numbers of people also hit the Lake this time of year – that’s an activity which offers a lot of fun, but one that can also pose a danger to those not taking safety seriously:

When swimming never venture out alone.  Always swim with a friend, or in a group; also be aware of everyone who is in your group, and where they are at all times.  Never, ever leave  small children without adult supervision.

Also never venture into the water or operate any type of watercraft if you’ve been drinking; you should also exercise precautions when using fireworks.

Remember, observing simple common sense safety measures can make all the difference in avoiding tragedy this holiday weekend.
