CENTRE–The National Weather Service in Birmingham has continued a heat advisory for Tuesday across parts of the WEIS listening area, including Cherokee, Etowah, Calhoun, and Cleburne counties.

The advisory will remain in effect from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday. Maximum heat index values from 105 to 109 degrees are expected.

Dangerous Heat Expected Tuesday

Hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat-related illnesses. Anyone working or spending time outdoors should take additional precautions.

Residents should drink plenty of water and stay in an air-conditioned location when possible. The National Weather Service also recommends avoiding direct sunlight and checking on relatives and neighbors.

Strenuous outdoor activities should be moved to the early morning or evening when possible. Those who must work outside should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Residents should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and learn the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended inside a vehicle. Temperatures can quickly rise to deadly levels, even during a short stop.

Anyone overcome by heat should immediately move to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and anyone experiencing symptoms should call 911.

The advisory also includes St. Clair, Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Chambers, Macon, Bullock, Lee, Russell, Pike, and Barbour counties.
