The issue of whether or not the local One-Cent Sales Tax for Education will remain in place was at the forefront of the Cherokee County Commission agenda, Monday as Mitchell Guice, Superintendent of Education, addressed commission members:

Afterwards Commissioner Marcie Foster asked Guice why the measure wasn’t being placed on the General Election Ballot in November – Guice said that the current tax actually expires on September 30th. Chairman Kirk Day said that would impact business owners, as well as those who collect the tax.

Commissioner Foster stated that she would be willing for the commission to impose the tax for a period of two months for the sake of continuity until after the General Election, adding that she felt there would be greater voter participation in the General Election.

The commission failed to take any action on the measure Monday, but may choose to revisit the topic during their next meeting.

Also during that meeting Chairman Day made an announcement regarding upcoming board appointments:

In other business – the commission approved a Revenue Commission Office budget revision request for the current fiscal year, and also approved participation in the WEIS Radio “Shop at Home” campaign.

The next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is slated for Monday, December 14th at 10:00am in the County Administration Building in Centre.
