Another phone scam has recently hit northwest Georgia – this time around, the con artists’ are illegally using the name of the U.S. Treasury Department.
The caller claims to be from the Legal Affairs Division – then gives a phony name and badge number – they then state that the call is in regard to a so-called “enforcement action” being taken in connection with a tax fraud involving the person’s name.
They go on to say that ignoring the call could result in the person having to appear before a federal grand jury or federal judge to “face charges.”
That intended victim is finally told to “call back” before the matter goes to a “federal claims court”. Authorities stress that these calls are a scam – and under no circumstances should you call anyone back in regard to the threats.
Scam artists routinely use such methods to frighten their victims into complying with their demands; in this case, it’s the threat of having to “go to court” in regard to some unspecified “tax violation” which doesn’t exist.
If you should receive such a call, simply hang up forget about it.
