County Commission Names A Portion Of County Road 8 As “The Gowens Brothers Highway”

The Cherokee County Commission recognized four members of the Gowens family by dedicating a portion of County Road 8 in Spring Garden as The Gowens Brothers Highway – Odus, Herman, Vester and Walter were all born and raised on the portion of the highway named after them and also served the country in World War II.

Gowens Bro HighwayIn other business the Commission held a Public Hearing on the matter of vacating a portion of County Road 563 – there being no public opposition, the commission adopted the formal Resolution vacating a portion of the road.

Commission Chairman Kirk Day announced that Appointments/Reappointments to fill three terms of the Cherokee County Health Care Authority ending December 31, 2014 would be made during the Commission’s regular meeting on December 8, 2014.

Submittal of resumes, letters, recommendations, etc will be accepted through the close of business on Wednesday December 3, 2014.

The Commission also approved an agreement approving a grant agreement with the Alabama Department of Youth Services Agency in the amount of $197,000 – the funds will be utilized for the Cherokee County Savings At-Risk Program or (STAR).

The county will also be participating once again in the WEIS Radio Shop At Home Campaign and made a unanimous decision to do so with funds coming from each of the four commissioners residual tobacco tax funds.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will be Wednesday, November 12, at 10:00am in the County Administration.
