Man Released from Cherokee County Jail Arrested Later That Same Day in Rome

A 37-year old Rome man, who was arrested earlier this month after allegedly fleeing from Cherokee County Alabama authorities is facing charges of drug trafficking in Floyd County.

Smith, Thomas WatsonAccording to reports at the Floyd County Jail, Thomas Watson Smith Jr. was booked into the Floyd County Jail on Tuesday.

Officers with the Rome-Floyd Metro Drug Task force reportedly found a large quantity of meth packaged for resale during the execution of a search warrant at Smith’s residence on Sikes Story Road back on August the 10th. In addition to the trafficking charges, Smith is also charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession with the intent to distribute and possession of drug related objects.

Smith had been in the Cherokee County Jail since an August 10th car chase that started with a routine traffic stop in the Forney Community.

According to previous reports, while deputies were speaking with Smith and 40-year old Joseph Daniel Kennamer, they proceeded to flee, striking one of the officers with the vehicle, knocking him to the ground.

The deputy fired several rounds from his duty weapon, striking the side of Smith’s vehicle.

After Smith and Kennemer were stopped on Highway 411 near the Georgia State Line, officers reportedly recovered approximately 1 pound of what appeared to be methamphetamine that had been dumped onto the roadway and 30-thousand dollars in cash.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office charged Smith with second degree assault, trafficking illegal drugs, resisting arrest, and attempting to elude police officers. He had been released from the Cherokee County Detention Center shortly after 9:00am Tuesday (August 26th).
