Missing Rainbow City Woman Found Safe – Could Face Charges

ChapmanA Rainbow City woman reported missing August 7th has turned up safe at the residence of a relative in Birmingham – and she could be facing charges.

53 year old Beth Dowdy Chapman was found over the weekend at the home of a sister; she was last seen on August 8th when she was caught on video by an ATM surveillance camera while withdrawing money.

Chapman had been driving a rental car with Illinois plates – which was due back on August 12th. She could face charges for not returning the rental car on time according to police.

She had been involved in a head-on collision back on July 30th in Odenville, after which she rented the Volvo she had been driving. After that accident Chapman was treated at Riverview Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained in the wreck; hospital employees stated that she was wearing heavy make-up when she came in – in what appeared to be an effort to mask bruises on her face, and she told them she had “fallen out on the curb.”

Authorities said Chapman took a trip to Biloxi and New Orleans and had turned her phone off which resulted in family members being afraid she may have been the victim of foul play – after being found at her sister’s home she was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Captain Chase Jenkins with the Rainbow City Police Department stated (quote) “If you’re a grown adult, and you start dropping off the grid – and you know that people are going to be worried and get the police involved – we can’t let that go.” (end-quote).

During her disappearance Rainbow City Police consulted with the FBI, U.S. Marshal’s Office and various other law enforcement agencies on the case.
