A Piedmont man was free on bond Friday following his arrest on charges connected to Internet videos of himself complaining about cyclists. He could face up to year in jail.

Keith Maddox was released from the Calhoun County Jail on $3,000 bond shortly after his arrest Thursday afternoon, according to Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson. Maddox faces a potential maximum penalty of 365 days in the county jail, if he is convicted on the charge of reckless endangerment. A court date has been set for June 17.

District Attorney Brian McVeigh declined to answer most questions about the case, but noted the role of social media in bringing Maddox’s alleged actions to light.

Videos Maddox posted to his Facebook page show him driving along what appears to be DeArmanville Road, and complaining about having to share the road with cyclists. After his most recent post Tuesday, the videos were shared widely on Facebook and Twitter, with many people urging law enforcement action against Maddox for allegedly endangering cyclists.

Shortly after Maddox’s arrest, supporters posted on the Facebook pages of The Star and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, expressing their support for Maddox’s and questioning whether the arrest was necessary. Many cycling supporters made their way to Facebook as well, some asserting that Maddox acted as a bully and that cyclists seen in the videos were harassed.
