Floyd County Sheriff’s Office C.H.A.M.P.S. Program Receives New Vehicle

If you ask Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Maddox what he likes best about his job, there is a good chance you will be there for a while. The veteran Deputy is in charge of the Choose Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety (C.H.A.M.P.S.) program through the Sheriff’s Office. And while Maddox loves his job as a deputy, being able to make a difference in the lives of children is his top priority.

The C.H.A.M.P.S. program, a 501(c) 3 organization, works with our county schools as well as Darlington and Georgia School for the Deaf to teach our youth and inspire them to make good choices in their lives. The program provides up to twenty different subjects, including drug awareness, home alone safety, child abduction prevention, internet safety, bullying, leaders and followers, and much more. In 2013 alone, the program graduated over 850 seventh graders.

Last year, it became obvious that there was a need for a new vehicle for the program. Not to be discouraged by tight budgets, Deputy Maddox took the initiative and began raising money for a new C.H.A.M.P.S. vehicle. Through generous contributions for the vehicle by Williams Communication, MGM Targets, Cornerstone Church, Walmart, Floyd Medical Center, Sunblock of Rome, Bailey 7, and program contributions by Chick-fil-a, Wrights Bonding, Suzuki, GA Power and Ace Hardware (Lindale) and money raised through the 2012 FCSO Zombieland, the program was able to purchase a new 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe.

`This vehicle will go a long way in helping us reach the youth of our community and teaching them how to make good life choices.` Said Floyd County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell. `Deputy Maddox has done a great job! This program would not be what it is today without his efforts.`
