Unemployment Declines in Cherokee County And State

Cherokee County businesses added 25 new jobs last month, bringing the county’s unemployment rate down from 6.5-percent in March to 5.4-percent in April.

That’s according to the newest unemployment statistics released by the Alabama Department of Labor.

The local jobless rate was 6.3-percent in April of 2012.

DeKalb County’s unemployment rate dropped slightly in April, checking in at 7.8-percent, down from 8-percent in March.

Etowah County’s jobless rate fell to 6.1 percent from 6.9 percent in March.

It was another significant drop from February’s rate of 7.9 percent.

Etowah County’s unemployment rate in 2012 was 6.3 percent.

According to the Alabama Department of Labor, Calhoun County’s unemployment rate decreased to 6.5 percent in April from 7.1 percent in March.

The statewide unemployment rate dropped from 7.2 to 6.9 percent in April.

Meanwhile, in Georgia the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 8.4% to 8.2% from March to April, considerably lower than the 9.1% in April last year and the best state-wide mark since December 2008.

County-by-county unemployment data will be released by the Georgia Labor Department next week.
