Birmingham Airport Authority to Conduct
Full-Scale Emergency Preparedness Drill

BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 7, 2025) – The Birmingham Airport Authority will conduct a full-scale disaster drill on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The drill will start at 10:30am.
The drill is referred to as the Triennial because it’s mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that airports practice this level of readiness and coordination at least once every 3 years. The goal is to create a realistic simulation of an aircraft incident that involves mass casualties and a significant emergency response. This helps test readiness and decision-making capabilities for all involved.
In the event of an actual emergency, the Airport Authority will rely on many emergency service providers and law enforcement agencies. These partners are invited to participate in the drill. The Triennial will involve a live fire situation on the airfield that will help to make it as real as possible with Aircraft Rescue Firefighters on scene doing fire suppression. There will also be approximately 100 volunteers posing as injured passengers so that emergency crews can practice the different elements of response including triage, transporting of the wounded, and identifying and tracking victims. UAB Hospital will be accepting patients as part of the drill.
