Centre, AL — A collision between an SUV and an 18-wheeler on Tuesday morning led to a fuel spill on the East Bypass in Centre.
The accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 9 and the 411 Bypass, in front of Fuel City. The impact ruptured the side fuel tank of the 18-wheeler, causing fuel to leak rapidly onto the roadway.
Emergency crews from the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency and the Cherokee County Fire Department quickly responded to contain the spill and prevented further spread.
As a result of the incident, northbound traffic on Highway 9 was redirected through Cherokee Plaza, while northbound lanes on the bypass were blocked and traffic detoured around the scene.
The driver of the SUV was evaluated by medics from Atrium Health Floyd EMS. Although they were checked at the scene, they did not appear to require transport to a hospital. The driver of the truck did not appear to be injured.
Responding agencies included the Centre Police Department, Centre Fire Department, Cherokee County EMA, and Atrium Health Floyd EMS.
