The Star ID Deadline Is Approaching How Will This Affect Travel?

The federal deadline for getting a Secure, Trusted, Reliable Identification (Star ID) is May 7, 2025. The Star ID is part of Real ID Act, which deals with security, authentication and the issuance procedure standards for state driver licenses and identification cards.

After May 7 the TSA will no longer accept your state issued license or ID card if it is not a Star ID. Questions have arose about what ID’s will be accepted if you don’t have a Star ID and want to fly domestically within the U.S.  According to the TSA website there are alternate forms of ID that will be accepted such as U.S. Passports and others.

According to the TSA website for those without a Star ID or other accepted forms of ID you may be ask to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name and current address to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint, where you may be subject to additional screening.

If you choose to not complete the ID process you will not be allowed into the checkpoint. Travelers under the age of 18 are not required to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for those under the age of 18.
