Leesburg Town Council Passes New Towing Ordinance for Unlicensed or Uninsured Drivers

Town of Leesburg Passes New Ordinance to Tow Vehicles Operated by Unlicensed or Uninsured Drivers

Leesburg, Alabama  – The Town of Leesburg has passed a new ordinance authorizing law enforcement officers to tow vehicles when the driver is found to be operating without a valid driver’s license or without proof of insurance. This action comes after reasonable means to confirm have been exhausted. This action comes in response to a growing number of incidents involving individuals with revoked, suspended, or expired licenses—many of whom have continued to drive despite receiving multiple citations putting others and themselves at risk.

This ordinance is aimed at ensuring the safety of Leesburg’s roads and protecting the well-being of its residents and visitors. By holding drivers accountable for failing to meet the legal requirements for operating a motor vehicle, the town hopes to curb repeat violations and reduce the risks associated with unlicensed or uninsured driving.

Under the new ordinance, officers will be permitted to have vehicles in cases where the driver’s license has been revoked, suspended, canceled, denied, or expired for more than 180 days be towed. Vehicles may also be towed if the driver is unable to provide proof of valid insurance. Exceptions are made in emergency situations or when a licensed and insured family member is present to take control of the vehicle. Any vehicle towed in compliance with the ordinance will be towed to wrecker currently on town’s rotation and all cost associated will be owners/drivers responsibility. At no point does the Town of Leesburg receive any portion of the towing or storage fees, nor does it derive any revenue from vehicle impoundments conducted under this ordinance.“We’ve seen too many cases where individuals without a valid license or insurance continue to endanger themselves and others,” said Chief of Police Hunter Brisendine. “This ordinance gives our officers the tools they need to act swiftly and decisively to keep Leesburg safe.”

The Town  emphasizes that this measure is not about punishment, it’s about prevention and responsibility. Ensuring that all drivers on the road are properly licensed and insured is a basic standard for public safety
