Gadsden- Longtime Gadsden Police Officer, and current Captain, Wane Keener will be leaving the department for a new opportunity. Keener is slated to become the new Chief of the Mobile Port Authority Police Department.
From the Gadsden Police Department:
Big changes are ahead for Captain Wayne Keener, and while we’re sad to see him go, we couldn’t be prouder. After 30 years of combined service, with 22 years of dedicated service to the Gadsden Police Department, he’s stepping into a new role as Chief of the Alabama Port Authority Police Department in Mobile, AL.

Captain Keener has done just about everything in his time with GPD. From Traffic Homicide Investigator, Sergeant over Special Projects, Bomb Squad Commander, Special Operations Lieutenant, and Captain over Operations, Professional Standards, and Services, his leadership, knowledge, and experience have shaped this department in ways that will last long after he’s gone.
More than the titles and accomplishments, Captain Keener has been a mentor, a leader, and a friend to so many in this department. His impact is seen not just in the officers he’s guided but also in his own sons, who are both sergeants at GPD today because of the values he instilled in them. His passion for the job and commitment to the profession are unmatched, and while Mobile is gaining an incredible
Chief, we’re losing a part of the GPD family.
Captain, we appreciate everything you’ve done, and we wish you nothing but the best in this next chapter. Go make an impact (as we know you will), and know that you’ll always have a home here in Gadsden.
