Mrs. Janet Lynn Walton Mertel, age 70, of Centre, AL passed away Sunday, December 1, 2024 in Gadsden Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held 12:00PM Tuesday, December 3, 2024 in the Perry Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. William Kirkpatrick officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00AM until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
After living in Tallapoosa, GA during childhood, she relocated to Mobile, AL before settling with her husband in Centre.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband Michael Mertel, son Michael Keith Mertel, mother Marilyn Farmer Walton, father Bill Walton, step-son Wesley Mertel, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Surviving Jan are her daughter-in-law Kristi Mertel, triplet grandchildren McKenzie, Caitlyn, and Tanner Mertel, aunt Donna Garner, and among her numerous cousins are Mike (Sally) McBurnett, Debbie (Ric) Hill, Gary (Helen) Price, and AP Walton with whom she remained close throughout their lives.
Jan worked for her father in the Fuzzy Duck in Gadsden for many years before joining the Gadsden Police Department in charge of the evidence room. She had a long battle with cancer beginning in 2016.
Jan will be missed by family and innumerable friends as well as her beloved dog Nutmeg.
In Lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Cherokee County Humane Society.
