Wilson, Gunn both account for 3 TDs, lead third-ranked Piedmont past J.B. Pennington

PIEDMONT – Piedmont senior quarterback Cole Wilson completed 13 of 19 pass attempts for 329 yards and three touchdowns in leading the third-ranked Bulldogs to a 41-21 victory over J.B. Pennington in Class 3A Region 6 football action on Friday.

Piedmont (7-0, 5-0) outgained the Tigers 520-201 in total yards.

Wilson tossed a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes to Rollie Pinto from 71 and 17 yards to put the Bulldogs in front 13-0. Wilson then connected with Ishmael Bethel on an 85-yard score with 9:31 in the second to give the Bulldogs a 19-0 advantage.

Pinto caught eight passes for 189 yards and two scores. Bethel had five receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown.

J.B. Pennington (5-3, 3-3) got on the scoreboard on the ensuing kick return. Josiah Coover returned the kick 93 yards to trim Piedmont’s lead to 19-7.

Following Hayes Gunn’s 15-yard touchdown run that made the score 25-7, Coover scored again with 32 seconds left before halftime on an 11-yard pass from Connor Timmerman. The Bulldogs led at the break 25-14.

Timmerman opened the third-quarter scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run to bring the Tigers closer at 25-21, but Piedmont put the game away with a pair of Gunn touchdown runs from 15 and five yards with 7:15 remaining in the third and 7:49 to go in the fourth for the final.

Gunn had 13 carries for 78 yards and three scores. Brodie Homesley added 43 yards on five carries for the Bulldogs, who travel to Weaver on Friday.
