Strong Storm-Front Rolls Through Cherokee County Friday Afternoon/Evening

Some strong, severe weather made a rather unwelcome visit to Cherokee County and surrounding areas on Friday.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at 5:33pm, originally set to expire at 6:30; however that was extended until 7:30 that evening.

According to radar, wind gusts during that time reached up to 60 mph, as the front moved on through Cherokee County, and severe thunderstorms extended from 10 miles southeast of Ider to near Fort Payne and Fyffe, at around 20 mph, moving to the southeast.

At 6:05pm we had a tree down on County Road 99 located in Broomtown – and that tree did manage to take down power lines as it fell; at 6:09, we had a tree down on County Road 62, blocking both lanes for a short time.

Fortunately – we’ve had no reports of anyone being injured as that rough weather moved through the area.
