At approximately 4:15pm Monday, a two-vehicle accident took place on Alabama Highway 68 about half-way up the mountain from Leesburg.
According to information from the scene, a total of eight individuals were injured in that wreck with two being rushed to the FEMA Building, where a pair of medical helicopters were standing by. Those two have been identified as the drivers of the truck, and of the van involved; both were taken to a trauma unit at UAB. Meanwhile, the others were all rushed to Atrium Health Floyd in Rome by ground ambulance.
Leesburg Fire and Police, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department, the Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Sand Rock Fire Units, Atrium EMS and the Cherokee County EMA responded to the scene.
That collision remains under investigation, and no names have yet been released.
