Lady Warriors defeat Alexandria 49-23, Warrior boys fall short on senior night

CENTRE – Mary Hayes Johnson scored a game-high 18 points in leading the Cherokee County Lady Warriors to a 49-23 girls basketball win over visiting Alexandria on Tuesday.

Ellisan Givens added eight points for the Lady Warriors (23-4). Ava Haygood had seven points. Audrey Haygood and Nevaeh Gaidurgis both finished with five points.

Sumira Duncan topped the Lady Cubs with eight points. Allyssa Hunt finished with five points.

Cherokee County led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter and held a 23-12 advantage at halftime. The Lady Warriors took a 32-19 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Despite a 30-point effort by Eli Martin, the Warrior boys fell by the final of 71-61. Martin hit six 3-pointers in the game.

Jacob Cornejo added 13 points for the Warriors. Ben Moseley netted nine points and Jayquan Diamond finished with seven points.

Cole Wheeler and Quindavion McDowell both scored 21 points to lead the Valley Cubs. Wheeler had three 3-pointers.

Drake Davis also had three treys and delivered 13 points. Jaylen Henderson had 10 points and Jeffrey Beason finished with six points.

Alexandria led 22-20 after one, but the Warriors rallied for a 45-38 advantage at halftime. Cherokee County maintained a 59-56 edge at the end of three quarters. Alexandria went on a 15-5 run in the fourth for the final.
