MONTGOMERY – On Wednesday, the Alabama High School Athletic Association recognized five Cherokee County and Piedmont football players for their second-round playoff performances last Friday.
In the Warriors’ 49-14 victory over Haleyville, Jacob Cornejo led Cherokee County (11-1) with 176 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 22 carries – pushing him over 2,500 yards on the year. Cornejo set a new Cherokee County High School rushing record, breaking a mark set by former running back Michael Johnson in 1990. He heads into Friday’s quarterfinals versus unbeaten West Morgan (12-0) with 2,511 yards on 250 rush attempts and 31 TDs.
Haden Wheeler also scored on a 33-yard interception return for Cherokee County.
In Piedmont’s 35-30 loss to Lauderdale County, Cole Wilson compiled 324 yards on a 17-of-26 passing performance with four touchdowns for the Bulldogs (5-7). He fired three TD passes to Ishmael Bethel (49, 12 and 49 yards) and a 14-yard TD to Luke Rhinehart.
