Cherokee County Commission Meeting
During the planning session of the County Commission on Monday afternoon, LeBreeska and Curt Ponder of the Indian Mountain ATV Park met with the commission to update them on some activities at the Park. During the past weekend, Mrs. Ponder told the group the Patrons at the Park raised over $3000 to help feed hungry people for Thanksgiving. They told the Commission they are eager to work to help county residents. Their next fund raiser at the Park will be to benefit Veterans.
EMA Director, Shawn Rogers, updated the commission on the extreme dry conditions and the potential for Wild Fires. He said Leesburg, Sand Rock, and Tuckers Chapel battled one Sunday afternoon where a structure was destroyed. Rogers assisted DeKalb County Sunday where most of their fire resources were tied up battling wild fires and many Cherokee County Departments on standby to assist. He said for now, people do not need to do any outdoor burning.
Chairman Burgess told the Commission he plans to have a Bond Attorney present at the next meeting to get the process moving on the construction of a new Courthouse. He said he would have cost estimates with the bidding process timeline. The process will be on the agenda for the planning session of the next meeting.
During the regular meeting, a job posting for HMT-1 at the highway department was approved.
The 2024 Forensic Services agreement with Jacksonville State University for consultation and education in the amount of $2500 was approved.
The commission approved the bid for two 2023 Chevrolet Equinox for the Nutrition Department was approved in the amount of $48,103 to Donohoo Chevrolet of Fort Payne.
Marsha Hill was appointed to the Department of Human Resources Board in Seat 4 and Janice Haynes appointed to Seat 5. The terms are for 6 years each.
The next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will be November 13th at 9am in the Commission Chambers.
