~From WZQZ Chatooga County Radio
Work is underway for the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair that opens this Thursday and runs through Sunday. While people begin to notice when the rides come in for the midway and work begins on the fairgrounds at the Chattooga County Ag Building, the work to put on the fair each year begins months in advance.
Planning for the next fair begins immediately following the previous fair. The Chattooga County Fair Committee is a volunteer based organization that puts in countless hours and along with help from hundreds of volunteers and donations from many sponsors, puts on an event that showcases Chattooga County’s agricultural community and provides great entertainment for the community and has become one of the premier events in the county.
The county has a long history of hosting a fair. The first Chattooga County Agricultural Fair was held in 1904 on Commerce Street in front of the courthouse. As the fair grew it was moved to permanent fair grounds off Highland Avenue in Summerville. But the fair was on hiatus for a couple of decades until it was revived in 2014. For six years, the fair continued to grow and became one of the major attractions in the county. Then, in 2020, the fair was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The setback was only temporary as the fair returned in 2021 and this year, the Chattooga County Fair is expected to draw thousands for daily livestock shows, blue ribbon exhibits, entertainment and of course – the rides on the midway.
The fair will open Thursday at 5 PM and Thursday is free student night, sponsored by the City of Summerville.
