Tuesday was Election Day and voters went to the polls to make their choices known – and, in many cases, to send a message.
Wednesday morning, WEIS Radio spoke with several of the local winners, including a first time winner but certainly not a newcomer – having made a name for herself as a tough litigator in the District Attorney’s office for several years – Summer McWhoter Summerford:
Come January, Summerford will succeed long-time District Attorney Mike O’Dell who will be retiring following many years of dedicated service – to both the Cherokee and DeKalb county communities. McWhorter faces no competition in the November 8th General Election – and neither does State Representative Ginny Shaver, a big winner in Tuesday’s election, taking over 80% of the vote in the District 39 race:
Meanwhile County Commissioner for District II – Roger Nichols won re-election – and we spoke to him by phone Wednesday morning, as well:
Carlton Teague was unopposed in the race for County Commission District IV.
A number of local candidates ran unopposed this election cycle, including incumbent Andrew Jones in the Alabama State Senate District 10 race – Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, and incumbent Corey Colbert for Place #2 and newcomer Nathan Ealy for Place #1 on the Cherokee County Board of Education; County Coroner Paul McDonald also ran unopposed.
