An Oxford woman was being held in the Calhoun County Jail Friday on charges in connection with a burglary Wednesday that resulted in a standoff and the death of an additional suspect.
Melanie Spirit Goodman, 35, is charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree robbery related to the burglary of a home in Alexandria, said Calhoun County Chief Deputy Matthew Wade.
The homeowner interrupted the burglary in progress, authorities said Wednesday. Officials with the Sheriff’s Office say the other suspect, Michael Bresley, 41, pointed a gun that had been stolen from the home at the homeowner and demanding her phone before he and Goodman drove away.
A deputy later spotted the suspect’s vehicle near a Winn-Dixie grocery in Coldwater. Both Bresley and Goodman fled on foot, police said at the time, but Goodman was quickly arrested.
Bresley ran into a nearby wooded area, where police say he pointed a gun at deputies before fatally shooting himself in the chest.
Goodman is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 15.
