Accident in Leesburg Involving Dump Truck Pulling an Excavator / UPDATED

A dump truck that was pulling a trailer hauling an excavator was involved in a single-vehicle accident just after 6:00pm Monday, on Industrial Boulevard at the red light in Leesburg.

As the ’95 GMC truck was making the turn, the weight shifted, with the trailer hauling the excavator overturning sending the equipment into the roadway.   Fortunately the trailer hitch snapped, rather than causing the truck to roll as well.

No other vehicles were involved and no one was hurt in connection with the mishap, including the driver – listed on the report as a resident of Collinsville.

Afterwards, Alabama Department of Transportation crews were called to assist with the cleanup of approximately 60 gallons of fuel that spilled as a result of the wreck; a deep gouge in the road where the impact occurred also had to be repaired before the lanes were re-opened, so as not to be a hazard for motorcycles or other vehicles.

Hunter Brisendine with the Leesburg PD informed WEIS Radio that the roadway was re-opened around midnight.

Leesburg Police and Fire Department units responded to the scene, in addition to the Cherokee County EMA and Alabama State Troopers.
