According to federal officials – hundreds of people, in 37 states, have now gotten sick because of onions contaminated with salmonella. Those onions – imported from Chihuahua, Mexico – are now being recalled. The FDA says there have been 652 reports of illness, and 129 hospitalizations, but no deaths associated with the outbreak.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has identified onions imported by Idaho-based ProSource Inc., as the source of the outbreak.
Those affected onions were sold to restaurants and grocery stores across the country and ProSource Inc. has agreed to recall red, yellow and white onions with any import dates between July 1st and August 27th, 2021.
Alabama and Georgia are among the states affected (AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI, WV)
Anyone experiencing symptoms of salmonella infection, including cramps, fever, and aches, should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
