Cherokee County Schools are set to start a new year on August 19th, and during the most recent meeting of the Cherokee County School Board, the official Reopening Plan was approved.

The Board voted to support the reopening of schools  in a traditional, in-person format where students will attend school five days per week. The Reopening Plan outlines some basic steps the school system is taking to keep students safe as they return to school. In addition, students have the option of returning to school in a virtual setting with online instruction.

This plan may be amended as necessary based on changing circumstances and guidance from the Alabama Department of Education, Alabama Department of Public Health, and Centers for Disease Control.

School Board President Brian Jennings said the board made an as informed decision as any school board in the state could possibly make. Jennings said all the input and information they received from a number of different resources indicated the Board made a good, solid decision.

Superintendent of Education Mitchell Guice said that he is appreciative to everyone who has offered advice in assisting the Board with making the decision to reopen schools and in putting together the Reopening Plan. In particular, Guice thanked Cherokee County EMA Director Shawn Rogers and Dr. Ryan Rainer.
