Oil prices surged 3% on Friday following confirmation by the Pentagon that Iran’s top commander was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad, raising concerns of a bigger conflict between the two countries that could disrupt energy production in the region.

The average statewide price for a gallon of gas is at $2.36, that’s considerably lower than the national average of $2.58 according to AAA.

Locally gas prices range anywhere from $2.19 at the Chevron on West Main Street, Murphy USA and the Grub Mart in Centre, to around $2.24 – $2.29 in Cedar Bluff.  

A deteriorating relationship between the U.S. and Iran has the potential to affect consumers and the U.S. economy, though there are multiple factors that should keep things stable for people at the pump.
