Ginny Shaver’s “Born Alive” Abortion Bill Passes

A vote on a bill that would require a doctor to try and save the life of a child born after an attempted abortion passed the Alabama House Tuesday.

The 66-18 vote fell along the party lines. It comes a week after the State Legislature passed a measure making it a felony for a doctor to perform or attempt to perform an abortion in Alabama. The abortion ban bill goes into effect in six months.

The born alive bill was sponsored by Republican Ginny Shaver of Leesburg. It would require a doctor to attempt to preserve the life and health of a child if they survive an attempted abortion. Failure to do so could result in criminal penalties for the physician, including up to 20 years in prison and a fine of no less than $100,000.

Most Republicans voted for the measure; Democrats voted no.
