Laure Clemons, Director and Founder of the Extended Family program, recently paid a visit to the WEIS Radio studios to discuss the Extended Family for Kids offshoot which continues to grow in popularity in the local school system, with enrollment actually doubling from the previous school year:
Clemons says she sees many children who unfortunately feel somehow they’re to blame for the situation they’ve found themselves in and it’s extremely important they learn otherwise as soon as possible:
The main focus of the program is letting each child know that they’re not alone – that there are others going through the same thing, and that through learning and shared experiences, there is a better way of life:
The next set of lessons will begin on Tuesday, February 13th and are held once a week with each class lasting about 45 minutes. All a child has to do in order to sign up, is ask his or her Guidance Counselor for help getting started. Parents or guardians wishing to know more can contact the school and speak with the counselor.

Extended Family for Kids helps children of the incarcerated
Extended Family for Kids, a free program for children with loved ones incarcerated, is offered in every school in Cherokee County. Groups are forming now to begin Feb. 13. Parents and guardians should contact the school counselor by Feb. 9 to enroll students in the program.
“In Extended Family for Kids, children experience 9 lessons teaching them how to reduce stress, deal with anger, and make good choices today and in the future,” explained Laure Clemons, author of Extended Family for Kids. “We focus on the child, not the incarcerated person! That focus is what has made Extended Family for Kids so successful.”
Students in grades K through 12 can enroll in Extended Family for Kids. Students are put into age-appropriate small groups, which meet for 45 minutes each week led by trained Extended Family for Kids Program Leaders.
