Elected officials and community leaders from the state and local level along with family, friends, numerous former West Point Cadets and members of the general public gathered at the Cherokee Arena on Sunday afternoon to pay their respects to one of Cherokee Counties most admired public servants and citizens.
Longtime Probate Judge/Commission Chairman J. Kirk Day was laid to rest Sunday afternoon at the Needmore Cemetery in Gaylesville. During the service at Gadsden State Cherokee those in attendance shared many laughs and smiles as Kirk’s brother, Pastor Keith Day (Pastor of Believers Fellowship Church in Centre), Pastor Gene Evans and Pastor Jack Roach shared memories of Kirk’s life.
Members of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard lead by Commander Josh Summerford and Deputy Commander Michael Green stood guard as those in attendance paid their final respects.
Judge Day graduated from Cherokee County High School with honors in 1989. He was appointed and accepted to the United States Military Academy and completed his degree in 1993. He served nine years in the Unites States Army as a platoon leader, company executive officer, and battalion-level adjutant. He completed his career in the United States Army at the rank of captain. His overseas tours included company commander in South Korea and battalion-level adjutant in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In 2004 he was appointed by Gov. Bob Riley to complete the unexpired term of probate judge. of Cherokee County. He was elected to this office in 2012 and served as probate judge and chairman of the Cherokee County Commission until the time of his death. Kirk based his public service on West Point’s values of “Duty, Honor and Country.” He felt that government service was an honor and a sacred trust. He loved Cherokee County and worked tirelessly for the good of its citizens.
Judge Day is survived by his parents, Wayne and Barbara Day of Centre; brother, Keith (Cyndi) Day of Centre; nephews, Justin Day and Joshua Day; niece, Gabriella Day.
Kirk frequented the WEIS studios on numerous occasions despite his busy schedule and never turned down an opportunity to join Merry Jerry on the air to discuss important issues facing the county . Often times he would simply drop by to just see how things were going, memories that all of us at WEIS will cherish for a lifetime. We at WEIS will miss his Leadership for the County and his frequent visits. We extend our thoughts and prayers to his family.
Alabama Supreme Court Justice Lyn Stuart has Commissioned Cherokee County District Court Judge Wes Mobley as ‘Special Probate Judge’ pursuant to a formal request made to the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts by 9th Judicial Circuit Judge the Honorable Randal Cole and Cherokee County Chief Clerk Renee Gossett.
Judge Mobley will preside over the judicial functions of the Probate Court of Cherokee County and will also maintain his duties as District Court Judge.
