Stockbyte/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to approve tougher sanctions on North Korea, including a ban on exports worth at least $1 billion.
This comes after Pyongyang’s first successful tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.
The measure was drafted by the U.S. and negotiated with South Korea and China.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley lauded the resolution as “the single largest economic sanctions package ever levied against the North Korean regime,” and “the most stringent set of sanctions on any country in a generation.”
Haley also praised China after slamming the country last week for their aloofness with regard to North Korea: “I have previously pointed out that China has a critical role to play on matters related to North Korea. I would like to personally thank the Chinese delegation for the important contributions they made to this resolution.”
The sanctions ban North Korea from exporting coal, iron, lead and seafood products that are estimated to be worth more than $1 billion.
