Cherokee County’s annual “Crappie Rodeo” is now underway.
Fishing experts from far and wide make the trip each year to test their skills – and this time around the tournament features its biggest possible combined payout ever, with more than $180,000 in cash prizes just waiting to be reeled in.
A total of 1,013 tagged crappie have been released into Weiss Lake, with 998 of those being worth $50.00 each, two at $1,000 each and 13 valued at $10,000 each on various dates over the course of the tournament.
Prize fish are easily identifiable through their fluorescent orange tags – each $10,000 fish is outfitted with a florescent yellow tag.

This year’s Weiss Lake Crappie Rodeo continues through April 30th. The 2017 Weiss Lake Crappie Rodeo is brought to you by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and Weiss Lake Improvement Association.
Weiss Lake Improvement Association meetings are open to the public and they are held the third Monday of every month, at 5:30pm, in the Cherokee County Administration Building’s Conference Room (Cedar Bluff Road in Centre).
