BananaStock/Thinkstock(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — A woman in Newport News, Virginia, claims she is receiving an endless stream of calls from Cuisinart customers.
“Two or three days ago I started getting calls, and I just thought they were wrong numbers,” she told ABC affiliate WVEC-TV on Wednesday. “But as I paid attention, they were all saying the same thing about this Cuisinart recall.”
Cuisinart recently recalled eight million food processors after it was discovered that pieces of the blade could break off, putting customers at risk. The company asked those affected to call 877-339-2534 for assistance, but apparently at least one hundred callers reached Jacqueline McDonald instead.
“I get like ten calls back to back—bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. I get calls from all kinds of area codes—from Las Vegas, Puerto Rico,” she said.
McDonald said that the first seven digits of the number Cuisinart handed out are identical to her home phone number – if you leave out the 757 area code. She said she thinks people are attempting to call Cuisinart from their landline phones, forgetting to dial “1” before dialing “877”, and accidentally getting directed to her.
“I try to be nice to everyone. I talk pretty decent to people—I try to put myself in their shoes. They’re just trying to find the information. They’re only dialing the numbers that [Cuisinart] gave them,” she said.
However, she hopes Cuisinart will either change the customer service phone number or clarify that customers must dial “1” first when attempting to call the company.
“This is very annoying,” she said about the calls. “They need to compensate me for sitting here answering the phone.”
Cuisinart did not respond to requests for comment from WVEC-TV.
