Consumer Alert: Millions of Home Dehumidifiers Recalled

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) – More than three million dehumidifiers are being recalled by Midea after it was discovered that the product could overheat, which could lead to smoke and it catching fire.

The Chinese company recommends that consumers who have purchased a dehumidifier turn it off and unplug it immediately and contact GD Midea for either a replacement unit or a partial refund. Any consumer whose dehumidifiers were manufactured before Oct. 1, 2008 will receive a partial refund.

Midea is responsible for manufacturing dehumidifiers for such companies like Frigidaire, GE, and Honeywell, among others.

There have been 38 reports of smoke and fire which have led to about $4.8 million in property damage. No injuries have been reported.
