Authorities have now released the name of the teenager who drowned over the weekend while swimming at High Falls Park in DeKalb County.
Sixteen year old Gavin Brooks, of the Union Hill community near Morgan City, was swimming with his 14 year old girlfriend and her 30 year old mother Saturday afternoon around 5:30, when he went underwater and failed to re-surface.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was called and rescue personnel went in after the boy as did another person who was swimming nearby. That person had to be rescued by the Fischer Rescue Squad and was transported to Marshall Medical Center South in Boaz for treatment.
According to the Ft Payne Times-Journal the rescue squad recovered the drowning victim’s body around 8:30 that night; Sheriff Jimmy Harris said the body will be sent to the State Forensics Lab on Huntsville for an autopsy, due to his age.
